Go for depth.
How many new students want to go deep?
It is gratifying to get new faces in the door. To have new energy in the room. To see light bulbs turn on, connections built, impact made. But how many of those people keep digging for more?
Some come, get what they are looking for and go on their way.
Some come, build a strong connection and stick around for a long time. Years later they still ask the same questions, still have the same hangups.
Some come, and they come with a blaze. They eat up all they can, put in a huge amount of effort and energy, make significant contributions and build up a lot of trust and respect. And then they burn out and disappear.
Some come, and they put in the time and energy. They contribute, their questions evolve and become more nuanced, they keep digging. They keep showing up, year after year. Year after year, they become more integrated, take on more responsibility, are more generous and more patient. Their understanding deepens, and with depth comes breadth and subtlety. Connections are made, insight drawn out. They share, lift people up and make an impact on those around them.
Not every student can plumb the depths. Some don't have the capacity, some don't have the time, some just aren't in it for those reasons.
If you're lucky, you will find a few who go deep.

Trainers, coaches and mentors.
The
personal trainer helps someone who has never done the practice to get
started. Helps them to learn the techniques. To stay motivated. The personal
trainer says, "Be here at 6pm and give me a hundred pushups."
The
coach works with people who are passionate about the practice and want
to get better, to overcome weaknesses. They help them actualize their
potential. The coach says, "Great job on last weeks pushups. Your thighs
are underdeveloped so let's work on those this week."
The
mentor works with people when they need them. They build lifelong
personal relationships. They inspire, connect the dots and build a
bigger picture. The mentor says, "I have enjoyed watching you overcome challenge after challenge this past year. How were you able to work through pain and failure along the way? What are you going to focus on this year?"
Each
of these requires a different level of time and energy. Each has its
own function and purpose.
Do we need more personal trainers? Definitely, a lot of people don't know how to do the practice
or how to get past their own personal obstacles.
Do we need better
coaches? Definitely, a lot of people have their own practice, but either
feel stuck or don't see how it all fits together.
Do we need more
mentors? Of course. We need people who are generous with their time and energy, people who are willing to be present, to listen and to nudge.
The personal trainer isn't doing their job if they are acting like a mentor. A mentor who gets wrapped up in the specifics and tries to control outcomes and results isn't a mentor at all.
Which are you trying to be? What does your student need?

Struggling.
We are all struggling. Struggling to find our balance. Struggling with our health and our work. Struggling to discover our purpose or passion.
We try to resolve this struggle, to figure it out and to find the right answer. We think that if we can fix this situation then everything will be fine. We will be happy and feel content.
So we fix our relationships. Our work. We try to find a new social circle, a new hobby and a different story. We search and we find and we fix.
Except with all the fixing we have been doing over the years we still find ourselves in the same situation. Strange isn't it?
Strange that we keep trying to fix the outer condition of things. We keep trying to fix our situation and our surroundings.
What if we stopped investing all that time and energy in applying a fix? What if instead of trying to blame the outer condition of things we look at our own minds? What is it about our habits, our neurosis, our negative emotions that contributes to our struggles?
The path ahead is not going to be easy, but if we are honest with ourselves we will realize that shifting the blame and never brought us any closer to the goal.
Time to take responsibility for our struggles. We don't need to fix the whole world in order to fulfill our aims, we simply need to train our mind. The weight of the world rests on this task.

Static.
We are not very familiar anymore with static on the radio, but do you remember those days of dialing into a radio station? You would get close, close enough to hear the lyrics, but just off enough that you kept tweaking the dial.
Then you would hit it.
The vibrance of the music would shoot through the speakers, its clarity would lift your soul. Its energy enliven your mind. Oh, how those hips would start to groove and that music would move you.
You would dance.
Today most of our days are filled with static. The endless distraction, consumption and activity. The static of our job, our situation, our chosen social network. We are all supposed to be somewhere or something but where we are at is not it. Most days we can barely even discern the lyrics, there definitely ain't no music coming through.
Every once in awhile though, we tune in. We hear something that we connect with. It moves us.
If that music stirs your heart, picks you out of your funk, makes you feel a little jive- Follow it. Let it move you and create the conditions for it to keep playing in your life. Go deeper.
Then you might find your music. Your rhythm.
Share your music with the world. Be Generous. Be Loving. Be Kind. Let it lift the weak and enliven the weary. Let it infuse your work, your life and your day.
It's good to be dancing again.
